£1500 of food collected for Dunfermline’s homeless! Gillespie members invited shoppers in the Kingsgate Centre to “fill our trolley” outside Somerfields on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. As a result, we were able to give Frontline Fife and their Rough Sleepers initiative a massive 23 full trolleys of non-perishable foodstuffs. This has been distributed to those living rough, in crisis or unable to get benefits, albeit temporarily.
Often the most vulnerable are also the most lonely, so Easter was an appropriate time to remember those who find themselves without even the basic essentials of food and accommodation. Some of the food was used at Gillespie’s drop-in centre where meals are provided for the homeless. Everyone who helped was blessed by the generous response of the Dunfermline folk and are looking forward to doing more of the same in the near future. This was truly an example of faith and mission in action!
Mission
It has been said that the Christian Church is the only organisation which exists for the benefit of others rather than for itself or its own members. Whilst it is important for Christians to grow and mature in their faith, Jesus also commanded us to go into all the world and make disciples. ‘All the world’ includes our own town and local community, and many of the activities of Gillespie Church are geared towards telling people around us about Jesus. These include outreach such as J in the Park, a summer tent mission at Wellwood in the north of our parish, and the Jesus Grotto, where we turn the Gillespie Centre into a Christmas Story experience. Moss Barclay is the co-ordinator for these Mission activities.
Wellwood: Football Initiative on Monday Nights As part of our mission of outreach to the young people of Wellwood we have started a regular Monday night football project that takes place at Queen Anne High School between 8-9.30pm. Around 24 young people attend regularly. The project is supported by a group of volunteers and is seen as being a good opportunity to engage with young folk of Wellwood. If anyone is interested in becoming involved as a volunteer, or requires further information about the initiative, please speak in first instance to Stuart Landels. Wellwood: Football on Friday evenings We have recently become involved with the Vine Synergie, a twilight Football League. A team known as the Gillespie/Wellwood Boys (now officially known as “GWBOYS”) is now involved in participating in a competitive football League with teams from around Dunfermline. Regular weekly reports on their progress within the League are posted on the front page of the web site whenever they are received...
FRONTLINE FIFE DROP-IN
Frontline Fife (formerly Open Door Fife) is a local charitable organisation whose aim is to help those who are homeless, and also to prevent homelessness. They hold a drop-in for homeless people in the Church Centre every Friday from 12 – 2 pm. A free wholesome meal is provided and there is an opportunity to chat. Frontline Fife relies on volunteers from the church to assist in serving food and there is also currently an opportunity to work as a volunteer cook. If you are interested in becoming involved in this work please contact Aileen Christie. ROUGH SLEEPERS FOOD COLLECTION On the last Sunday of every month, members of the congregation are asked to bring along food or toiletries for collection at the front or back door of the church. These are then distributed through the Rough Sleepers Initiative to those who are in most need. As those receiving the food often have no permanent home and little access to cooking facilities, it is best if items supplied are ‘instant type’ requiring only hot water, or tins with ring pulls. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and clothes are always well received. If you would like further information please contact Ed Christie.
